The basic braid is also known as a plait. It is the main building block you’ll use for all braiding styles, but it’s also a beautiful hairstyle on its own. It involves weaving three sections of hair together and repeating this process to form the braid. This really is one of the most versatile techniques and looks great in all hair types. It can be used in so many different ways, as you’ll see throughout this chapter.
IDEAL HAIR LENGTH
Medium to long
HAIR EXTENSIONS NEEDED?
Team the braid with a ribbon or bow for a cute finish, or use flowers for a bohemian look.
You can wear the basic braid anywhere in your hair. Wear it to the back or over your shoulder to the side. Combine this with the half ponytail for a half-up braid, or with the high crown ponytail for a high braided ponytail.

HOW TO GET IT BASIC BRAID
WHAT YOU NEED
- Hair elastic
1). Brush your hair to remove any knots and split your hair into three equal pieces.
2). Take the piece on the left and cross it over the middle. Next, take the piece on the right and cross it over the left (now middle) piece. You’ll start to see the braid forming.
3). Take the section now on the left and cross it over the middle and then repeat again, bringing the right over the left (now middle).
4). As you continue down, bring each outer piece over the middle to keep forming the braid.
5). When you’re finished, secure the end of your hair with an elastic.
TOP TIP : Using small clear elastics will help when creating braided hairstyles, as the band won’t show through the finished upstyle. Pull gently at the sides of your braid to loosen it and stretch it out. This will make your hair look thicker and emphasize the shape.
