Cornrows

THE LOOK

Cornrows are a traditional African hairstyle and braiding technique. These microbraids might be time-consuming, but they have a lot of impact and can last longer than other braided hairstyles. If you have the time, go for a full head of cornrows, or opt to integrate them into other hairstyles as an accent. Depending on how you wear them, cornrows look great for a big night out or a day in town with friends, and are especially great for the beach.

TRY THIS

There are so many ways to incorporate cornrows into your favorite hairstyle. Try wearing them on the side to create a sweeping part, almost like an undercut. Depending on your skill level and patience, you can create patterns with your cornrows by zigzagging and deviating the braids as you go.

HOW TO GET IT CORNROWS

WHAT YOU NEED

  • Tail comb
  • Hair clips
  • Small hair elastics
  • Spray bottle filled with water (optional)

1). Use your tail comb to create a neat section for your cornrow braid. Clip the rest of your hair out of the way while you braid.

2). Split the start of the section in three and start to create a Dutch braid.

3). Add in small sections as you braid, always bringing the hair in from underneath.

4). When you have run out of hair, finish in a regular braid and secure the end with a small hair elastic.

5). Repeat over the rest of your head, making sure you take equal sections so that your cornrows are the same size.

TOP TIP : It takes time to get these braids to sit correctly. If you start with a larger braid and keep practicing, you will eventually master the technique. It helps to make neat sections, and to clip away the rest of your hair while you’re working. Use water in a spray bottle to dampen your hair as you work.
