Crowning Braid

THE LOOK

A pretty twist on a half-up hairstyle, crowning braids are formed by crossing over two braids at the back of your head. This style is an excellent look for weddings, whether you’re part of the bridal party or a guest. Because all the detail is at the back, a veil or half veil looks beautiful pinned into the braids. This half-up, half-down style looks best with loose layers at the front and bangs left long and unstyled.

ACCESSORIES

For a colorful twist, weave a fine ribbon through the finished braids so that it runs in and out of the inner edges. You can also add a headband or use a jeweled clip to pin back your bangs.

TRY THIS

Different techniques can add stunning detail to this simple style. Try other types of braids, such as the fishtail braid, the uneven braid, or the slide-up braid.

HOW TO GET IT CROWNING BRAID

WHAT YOU NEED

  • Brush or comb
  • 2 hair elastics
  • Bobby pins

1). Brush or comb your hair and part it down the middle. Gather two large sections of hair on each side of your face above your ears. Split one of the sections in three.

2). Begin braiding. Start loosely at the top, and angle your braid back. This way the braid will sit in the direction that you want the finished style to be. Secure the end of the braid with an elastic.

3). Repeat on the opposite side, making a braid above your other ear.

4). Cross the first braid behind your head and pin in place with bobby pins, making sure to tuck in the ends.

5). Cross the second braid behind your head and pin it level with the first braid, tucking the ends in underneath.

TOP TIP : If your braid is quite long, you can fold it in half and tuck the ends in behind the braid. To keep the two braids neat and close together as they cross, push pins in between the two braids so that they are connected and fixed down more securely. Pull the sides of the braids out to give them shape and body.
