Mermaid Braid

THE LOOK

The mermaid braid takes your regular side braid and transforms it into something amazing. Best suited to longer hair, the mermaid braid is the perfect summer hairstyle, and is also ideal for a special nighttime date. This stunning braid gives the illusion of being a six-strand braid through the clever use of bobby pins.

ACCESSORIES

Apart from the scarf braid variation (see below), it’s not necessary to include more hair accessories. Keep the look relaxed and simple, and let the braid shine.

TRY THIS

Try incorporating a scarf into your mermaid braid. Place the scarf around your head and weave it into both reverse braids.

HOW TO GET IT MERMAID BRAID

WHAT YOU NEED

  • Brush
  • Hair clip
  • 3 hair elastics
  • Bobby pins

1). Brush your hair to remove any knots. Bring your hair over one shoulder and divide into two equal sections.

2). Clip away one section of hair and braid the other section in a reverse braid (see pages 40–41), and secure the end with a hair elastic.

3). Unclip the other section of hair and create another reverse braid. Stretch out the two braids by gently pulling at the sides.

4). Line up the two separate braids so they begin to look like one large braid. Focus on aligning the center of the braids and don’t worry if the ends are uneven. It’s less important for the outer sides to match, but you do want to make the center appear to be one single braid.

5). Use bobby pins to connect the center of the two braids together, edge to edge. Angle your pins through both braids and push them vertically at the end to secure them. You’ll need to place your pins about every 1 or 1 1⁄2 inches. Join both braids together with a hair elastic.

TOP TIP : You can remove the hair elastics from the two braids and just use one to combine them together. If you use clear elastics, this isn’t important, as they are more inconspicuous. Don’t worry about making the two reverse braids too neat; the style will look better messy.
