Top Knot with Braid

THE LOOK

Take your top knot to the next level and let your hair be your accessory in this look. For this style you simply wind a braid around the base of your high bun. Depending on the length and thickness of your hair, you can start with a top knot or donut bun, and leave a section out to braid around the bun base. This technique offers a simple way to dress up a regular, everyday bun.

ACCESSORIES

A simple headband or clip adds detail, but the braid is the real accessory in this hairstyle. For an evening look, a beaded or jeweled barrette can be added to the back of the bun. Small jeweled pins can also be added down the center of the braid for some added sparkle.

TRY THIS

Instead of a basic braid around the base of your bun, try a fishtail braid. You can even do two or three very thin braids and wrap them around for added detail. You can also wear this bun to the side or low at the nape of your neck.

HOW TO GET IT TOP KNOT WITH BRAID

WHAT YOU NEED

  • Brush
  • Strong hair elastic
  • Hair donut (optional)
  • Small clear hair elastic
  • Bobby pins
  • Hairspray (optional)

1). Brush your hair and gather it up into a high ponytail. Secure with a strong hair elastic. Separate a section of hair from your ponytail and leave this under the hair donut. Place the donut padding at the base of your ponytail.

2). Split the section of hair under the donut into three and make a basic braid. Secure the end with a small clear hair elastic.

3). Leaving out the braid, make a donut bun. If your hair is very long, you can just do a regular top knot bun without the hair donut.

4). Pin your bun in place with bobby pins and then curve your braid around the base of your bun and pin with bobby pins.

5). If required, finish with a spritz of hairspray to hold the style and catch any flyaways.

TOP TIP : The thickness of your hair will determine the braid size that’s needed to go around the base of your top knot. When you take a section from your ponytail, make sure to leave enough hair to create the bun. You can add in extensions if your hair is fine or too short.
